Major Traffic Snarl-Up on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway Following Fatal Multi-Trailer Collision Near Emali
Kenyan police have reported major traffic disruptions on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway after a collision involving three trucks near Emali resulted in one fatality. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes via Machakos–Wote–Makindu during the ongoing clearing operation.

Emali, Kenya – The National Police Service (NPS) issued a traffic advisory on May 30, warning motorists of severe delays and significant gridlock on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway. The disruption follows a major collision involving three trailers near Emali in Makueni County. The accident occurred on a bridge in the Jet Inn area, tragically resulting in one fatality and leaving another motorist initially trapped under debris, according to authorities at the scene.
Accident Details and Response
NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga reported that the trucks collided at approximately 4:45 AM, completely blocking the crucial highway. Heavy fog was also reported in the area at the time of the incident, which may have been a contributing factor. Emergency recovery teams worked diligently to extract the trapped driver; however, he unfortunately did not survive his injuries. Another individual injured in the crash was airlifted to a hospital in Nairobi for urgent medical attention.
Alternative Routes Advised
Due to the extensive traffic build-up, police are strongly advising drivers to utilize alternative routes. Vehicles heading towards Mombasa are being directed to detour via Machakos, Wote, and Makindu. Conversely, Nairobi-bound traffic is advised to use the reverse route through Makindu, Wote, and Machakos. “The police service wishes to notify the public of a serious traffic gridlock,” Nyaga stated, urging commuters to adjust their travel plans accordingly as extensive clearing and investigation efforts continue at the crash site.
