Nairobi County’s environment chief Geoffrey Mosiria announced a crackdown on noise pollution, warning clubs, event organisers and churches that they must keep volumes below 35 decibels or face closure and prosecution.
Nairobi, Kenya – Nairobi’s environment department has launched a crackdown on noise pollution, targeting clubs, event organisers and churches that operate near residential areas. Geoffrey Mosiria, the county’s Chief Officer for Environment, announced that establishments in Pipeline Estate and other parts of the city will face closure if they exceed 35 decibels, the maximum sound level allowed under county bylaws. He warned that event organisers must either install soundproofing or obtain written consent from neighbours before hosting loud gatherings.
Mosiria said noise pollution complaints have resurfaced in Pipeline and Aston Villa estates, prompting the county to deploy officers to enforce compliance. Clubs emitting loud music risk being shut down and prosecuted under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act. The crackdown also extends to churches that hold night vigils known as ‘Keshas’; religious leaders are urged to manage noise levels or face penalties.
In addition to targeting entertainment venues, the environment department recently closed a noisy motor vehicle garage in Runda Estate after repeated complaints. Mosiria noted that the county will deploy security officers to prevent the garage from reopening, adding that repeat offenders will be barred from operating.
The crackdown comes amid rising concerns over urban noise pollution’s impact on health and quality of life. Residents welcomed the move, urging authorities to ensure sustained enforcement and to educate businesses and religious groups about the importance of adhering to noise regulations.
