President Museveni holds a commanding 74% lead in provisional results, pointing to a sixth term, while the opposition alleges fraud amidst a heavy security crackdown.

President Yoweri Museveni is cruising toward a contentious sixth term in office, with provisional results from the Electoral Commission giving the veteran leader a practically unassailable 74% lead with over 80% of votes tallied.
The mood at the National Tallying Centre in Kampala is one of inevitable formality. The numbers suggest a landslide that defies the palpable anti-incumbency sentiment witnessed during the campaigns. For Museveni’s supporters, this is a validation of stability; for the opposition, it is a statistical impossibility.
The figures released this morning paint a picture of total NRM dominance. In rural districts, Museveni is polling as high as 90%, numbers that Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) claims are "statistically engineered." Wine, currently garnering 23%, has failed to make significant inroads outside the central region, if the official data is to be believed.
"The President has secured the trust of the wananchi," declared NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong. "The youth have realized that hashtags do not build roads. Experience has defeated excitement."
With the result all but declared, the focus shifts to the aftermath. Will Bobi Wine concede, or will he call for mass action? His options are limited by his house arrest and the communication blackout. For now, Museveni sits comfortably on the throne, the "old man with the hat" having apparently outmaneuvered the "ghetto gladiator" once again.
