As Kenyan families mourn, the Foreign Minister insists the government is blameless, pointing fingers at "clandestine" agencies fueling the mercenary pipeline to Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi has washed the government’s hands of the deepening crisis involving Kenyan nationals recruited to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Speaking to the BBC, Mudavadi described the recruitment of approximately 200 Kenyans as "unacceptable and clandestine," squarely blaming illegal employment agencies for luring desperate youth into a foreign war zone. His comments come as families continue to mourn loved ones lost on the battlefield, with the government insisting it is a victim of deception rather than an accomplice to negligence.
The Minister revealed that the government has shut down over 600 rogue recruitment agencies in a crackdown aimed at stemming the flow of mercenaries."You cannot blame the government for this," Mudavadi asserted, emphasizing that none of the recruits traveled through official channels. This defense, however, offers little solace to the families who feel abandoned by a state machinery that failed to protect its citizens from exploitation.
Mudavadi announced plans to visit Moscow to address the issue directly, seeking a bilateral agreement to ban the conscription of Kenyans. This diplomatic mission highlights the delicate tightrope Kenya is walking—maintaining cordial relations with Russia while condemning the use of its citizens as "cannon fodder."
The situation exposes the dark underbelly of labor migration, where the desperation for employment drives young Kenyans into the arms of death. While the government claims innocence, the question remains: how did hundreds of citizens slip through the cracks of immigration and intelligence to join a foreign army?
As Mudavadi prepares for Moscow, the eyes of the nation are on him. He must return not just with assurances, but with a guarantee that Kenyan blood will no longer be spilled on the frozen steppes of Ukraine for a war that is not their own.
