Moi University lecturers issued a seven-day strike notice over unpaid June and July salaries and unimplemented agreements, warning that teaching will stop on August 20 if the administration fails to address labour grievances.
Academic staff threaten to withdraw labour starting August 20 unless salary and agreement breaches are resolved.
Eldoret, Kenya – August 13, 2025
Lecturers at Moi University have issued a seven-day strike notice, warning they will down tools beginning August 20, 2025, if the institution fails to resolve pressing grievances. In their communiqué dated August 12, the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) cited non-payment of June and July salaries at rates set in the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), along with the non-implementation of the Return-to-Work Formula, among other breaches.
Moi University has a troubled history of labor disputes, including a prolonged strike that ended in late 2024 after the signing of a return-to-work deal. This latest standoff follows persistent complaints of delayed salary disbursements, non-implementation of CBA terms, and administrative instability.
These recurrent disruptions not only hamper academic continuity but also reflect deeper financial and governance challenges within the institution.
Salary Dispute: Academic staff allege that June and July 2025 salaries were not paid as negotiated in the CBA.
Return-to-Work Formula: The agreement signed on November 30, 2024, has not been implemented.
CBA Violations: The university is accused of neglecting clauses governing staff promotions and retirement age.
Labour Rights: The union contends Moi University is violating workers’ constitutional rights, including both labour and freedom rights enshrined under Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Constitution.
Academic Disruption: The threatened strike comes as the university prepares for the new academic year. The impending action could derail student reporting and teaching schedules.
Broader Support: The Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), Moi University chapter, pledged support and may escalate action if resolution is not reached.
Governance Pressures: The strike underscores systemic concerns about financial mismanagement, timely funding, and effective university governance.
Awaiting University Response: University management and the council have yet to respond publicly.
Union Resolution Deadline: Lecturers expect resolution by August 20; failure to comply will trigger the strike.
Government Intervention: With the university struggling to meet obligations, stakeholders—including the Ministry of Education—may need to intervene to avoid academic collapse.
Moi University’s latest strike notice signals a critical juncture—underscoring how unresolved financial and labor concerns threaten institutional resilience. With the new academic term looming, the stakes for swift, inclusive action could not be higher.
