U.S. DOJ Investigation into Minnesota Leaders Sends Shockwaves Through the Twin Cities’ Kenyan Diaspora

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a criminal investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, accusing the two Democratic officials of potentially impeding federal immigration enforcement operations by criticizing and resisting actions by federal immigration authorities, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The probe has already involved subpoenas as part of efforts to examine whether Walz’s and Frey’s public statements and actions amounted to obstruction of federal law enforcement. 

Origins of the Standoff

The DOJ’s inquiry comes amid heightened tensions over a large immigration enforcement operation in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area that has seen federal agents from ICE and Border Patrol deployed in significant numbers. The investigation follows public criticism by Walz and Frey of the federal presence and the response to confrontations between federal officers and residents, including protests sparked by the fatal shooting of Renée Good by an ICE agent during the operation.
