Major automakers miss emissions targets as new efficiency standard exposes industry laggards in electric vehicle transition.

The era of consequence has arrived for the global automotive industry in Australia. Major manufacturers, including giants Mazda and Nissan, are staring down the barrel of multimillion-dollar penalties as they fail to meet the Albanese government’s new vehicle efficiency standards.
The first six months of data from the new scheme reveal a stark divide in the industry. While forward-thinking companies like BYD, Tesla, and Toyota have comfortably beat their emissions targets, others are lagging dangerously behind. Mazda faces a potential liability of approximately $25 million, while Nissan’s exposure stands at over $10 million. These "credits" must be purchased or the emissions reduced by 2029, or the fines will become due.
The data paints a clear picture of who is ready for the green transition and who is stalling. 40 companies, representing 68% of the market, met their initial targets. However, 19 manufacturers missed the mark, including household names like Subaru, Hyundai, and Honda.
Federal Transport Minister Catherine King defended the standard, noting that the industry average actually outperformed the target by 21%. "These results make it clear the standard supports both lower emissions and consumer affordability," she stated, rebutting industry lobbyists who claimed the targets were unachievable.
Despite the policy push, the market reality remains challenging. Electric vehicles accounted for only 12% of new sales in the second half of last year, far below the levels seen in China or Europe. Australia remains a nation addicted to petrol and hybrids.
The message from Canberra is clear: adapt or pay. For Mazda, Nissan, and others, the clock is ticking to overhaul their fleets before the financial penalties turn from potential liabilities into hard debts.
