Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has officially announced his intention to vie for the presidency in 2027 under the Jubilee Party ticket, signaling a significant shift in the country's political landscape.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has officially declared his bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, confirming the Jubilee Party as his political vehicle. The announcement, made during a consultative meeting with youth leaders in Nakuru County on Friday, October 3, 2025, marks a new phase in the Jubilee Party's efforts to re-establish its political footing after years of internal disputes.
Matiang'i urged Kenyans to register early for the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of broad participation in the democratic process. His entry into the presidential race on a Jubilee ticket positions the party at the centre of opposition realignment discussions ahead of 2027.
Matiang'i's declaration follows months of increased political activity across the country since his resignation from an international post to focus on his campaign. He recently attended a Special National Delegates Convention (NDC) of the Jubilee Party at the Ngong Racecourse, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta. This convention, held after prolonged internal wrangles, was widely seen as a precursor to Jubilee's strategic plans for the 2027 General Election.
Jubilee Party branch leaders had previously endorsed Matiang'i as their preferred presidential candidate, citing his extensive experience in government and strong governance track record. The party's Secretary General, Jeremiah Kioni, had also indicated the party's plan to support Matiang'i's presidential bid, noting a significant increase in party membership.
Meanwhile, the government is moving forward with key national programs. The 'whole-of-government approach' is being adopted for the rollout of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project.
President William Ruto has directed all Principal Secretaries to convene meetings with governors, Members of Parliament, and Members of County Assemblies by Monday, October 6, 2025, to sensitize leaders and youth on the NYOTA program. This Ksh5 billion initiative, funded in partnership with the World Bank, aims to empower 100,000 young people nationwide by providing Ksh50,000 grants to 70 individuals from each of Kenya's 1,450 wards to launch business ventures. The NYOTA project, a five-year transformative agenda, seeks to address youth unemployment, income insecurity, and limited savings.
In a separate development, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, flagged off relief food to drought-stricken Mandera and Turkana counties. This dispatch, from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Nairobi, is part of a broader government intervention targeting 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Land (ASAL) counties. An estimated 2.15 million people across ASAL counties are in urgent need of food assistance, according to recent data from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA).
The relief consignment includes 6,600 bags of maize for Turkana County, 7,200 bags of rice for Mandera County, and 8,840 bags of beans to be distributed between the two counties. This supply is expected to support approximately 204,600 people in Turkana and 287,700 in Mandera.
Analysts suggest that Matiang'i's entry into the presidential race could significantly influence public debate and policy execution in the near term. Stakeholders are calling for clarity on the timelines, costs, and safeguards associated with both political campaigns and government programs. The revival of Jubilee and Matiang'i's candidature could also test the unity of the broader opposition alliance.
The coming weeks will likely see intensified political maneuvering as Matiang'i consolidates his position within Jubilee and the broader opposition. The implementation details and initial impact of the NYOTA program and the ongoing drought relief efforts will also be closely monitored.
