A Russian drone strike hits an animal shelter in Zaporizhzhia, killing 10 dogs and traumatizing staff, illustrating the devastating toll of the war on the voiceless.

The horror of the war in Ukraine has found a new, innocent target. A ruthless Russian drone strike has obliterated the "Give Me Your Paw, My Friend" animal shelter in Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 10 dogs and leaving volunteers weeping among the rubble. The attack highlights the indiscriminate brutality of a conflict that spares no living creature.
The strike occurred at 9:00 AM local time, shattering the morning calm. Staff members described a "terrible buzzing sound" followed by an explosion that tore through the kennels. "The dogs were torn by shrapnel, pieces of their bodies were stuck to the fencing," said 18-year-old volunteer Alina Fober, struggling to speak through tears. "I knew all of them. They were good, beautiful dogs."
The shelter, located just 30 kilometres from the active front line, had been a sanctuary for animals abandoned by fleeing families. Now, it is a graveyard. Volunteers were seen wheeling away dead animals in wheelbarrows, while surviving dogs cowered in the debris, traumatized by the blast. Staff member Iryna, 41, described the scene as "hell on earth."
This incident is not isolated. Russia’s four-year invasion has triggered an ecological and animal welfare crisis. In October, a strike on a farm in Kharkiv killed 13,000 pigs. In September, horses were massacred at an equestrian club near Kyiv. The war machine grinds on, consuming everything in its path.
As the volunteers in Zaporizhzhia begin the grim task of burying the animals they tried to save, the world watches in horror. The attack serves as a poignant reminder that modern warfare has no boundaries.
"They didn't just kill dogs; they killed a piece of our humanity," Iryna said. In a war defined by artillery and geopolitics, the death of ten rescue dogs might seem small to generals, but to the people of Zaporizhzhia, it is a heartbreak too deep for words.
