Former Chief Justice David Maraga’s United Green Movement (UGM) has opened a new office in Mombasa, signaling a strategic push into the politically crucial coastal region ahead of the 2027 elections.

The United Green Movement (UGM) party, led by its 2027 presidential flagbearer, former Chief Justice David Maraga, officially opened a new county office in Mombasa on Friday, October 24, 2025. This marks a significant step in the party's national expansion strategy, aiming to establish a tangible presence in one of Kenya's most vital political regions. In a statement posted on his official X account, Maraga confirmed he presided over the launch, describing the office as a coordination center for party activities across the entire coastal region.
The Mombasa launch is part of an ambitious nationwide campaign by UGM to set up functional party structures in all 47 counties. Maraga announced that plans are already underway to open a second office in neighboring Kilifi County to further solidify the party's footprint in the region. “We are determined to have our presence in all 47 counties and the Diaspora as we strive to reset, restore and build our beloved Kenya under our Ukatiba philosophy,” Maraga stated on Friday. The specific location of the new Mombasa office remains DETAILS UNCONFIRMED.
UGM's entry into Mombasa introduces a new dynamic to the coastal political landscape, a region that has long been a stronghold for parties such as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The party is positioning itself as an alternative voice, distinct from established entities like ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Maraga's recent activities, including a tour of Tana River County to support UGM's candidate in the Chewani Ward by-election, underscore a concerted effort to engage directly with coastal voters. The former Chief Justice, who has gained noticeable traction among younger voters, particularly the Gen Z demographic, has been actively encouraging youth to register as voters.
The party's leadership, which includes co-party leader and former Ndhiwa MP Agostinho Neto, aims to anchor its political platform on principles of constitutionalism, social justice, ecological wisdom, and grassroots democracy. Maraga has publicly committed to tackling corruption and restoring the rule of law, themes he has emphasized since being unveiled as the party's presidential candidate on October 2, 2025. As of the time of this report, there have been no public statements from the leadership of ODM, UDA, or prominent Mombasa-based politicians regarding the opening of the UGM office. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REQUIRED.
Registered in 2019, the United Green Movement seeks to build a political movement grounded in ideology rather than personality or ethnicity, a common feature in Kenyan politics. The party's vision is “to establish a united, peaceful, & prosperous nation, in which all citizens enjoy social, economic and democratic rights, living in dignity and in harmony with their environment.” Its manifesto prioritizes tackling youth unemployment, promoting environmental sustainability, and ensuring social justice and equality. By choosing UGM, Maraga signaled an intention to sidestep established political vehicles in favor of a fresh, youth-oriented movement. The party's success in the coast and across Kenya will depend on its ability to translate its green and justice-oriented platform into a compelling proposition for voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
