Former Chief Justice declares readiness to join forces with opposition leaders to unseat President Ruto, citing a need to restore constitutionalism.
In a move that has sent tremors through Kenya’s political landscape, retired Chief Justice David Maraga has signaled his willingness to join a united opposition front to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Speaking in Mombasa, the man who once nullified a presidential election declared that he is ready to work with "anyone who shares our vision" to rescue the country from what he termed as a crisis of corruption and impunity.
Maraga’s entry into the political fray changes the calculus for 2027. Known for his unshakeable integrity and his refusal to bow to executive pressure, he brings a moral authority that few politicians can match. His potential candidacy or alliance offers a rallying point for a disillusioned electorate tired of traditional tribal politics.
However, Maraga was quick to set boundaries. He stated categorically that he would not engage in tribal alliances, warning that "politics of rallying ethnic communities against one another is retrogressive." His conditions for cooperation are strict: partners must value integrity, ethics, and the rule of law. "I cannot team up with leaders whose only demand is to represent their tribe at the table of power," he asserted.
The retired CJ hinted at discussions with former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i, suggesting the formation of a technocratic and reformist bloc. He emphasized that his motivation is not power for power's sake, but a desire to enforce the Constitution and protect citizens from government exploitation.
While critics argue that Maraga lacks the financial war chest and grassroots machinery of seasoned politicians, his supporters believe his reputation is his greatest asset. In a country weary of corruption scandals, a "Maraga Option" could appeal to the silent majority.
The 2027 race has just become significantly more interesting. If Maraga can translate his judicial legacy into political capital, the "united opposition" may well be a formidable force to be reckoned with, turning the election into a referendum on integrity versus status quo.
