Kakamega Homeboyz clinched their first victory of the 2025/2026 FKF Premier League season, defeating Sofapaka 1-0. The decisive goal came early in the match, easing pressure on the Kakamega-based club.
Kakamega Homeboyz secured their inaugural win of the 2025/2026 FKF Premier League season on Friday, October 3, 2025, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi. New signing Josphat Lopaga netted the solitary goal in the third minute of the match, marking a crucial start to his tenure and providing the team with much-needed points after a winless start to the season.
Both Kakamega Homeboyz and Sofapaka entered the match desperate for their first win of the campaign. Kakamega Homeboyz had previously drawn goalless with Mara Sugar FC. Sofapaka, on the other hand, had a disappointing start, recording only one point from their first three fixtures, including back-to-back home losses against Gor Mahia and Homeboyz. This defeat leaves Sofapaka at the bottom of the league table with just one point.
The decisive moment arrived early when Josphat Lopaga, a new acquisition for Kakamega Homeboyz, latched onto a long pass from John Omondi and struck the ball past Sofapaka goalkeeper Victor Kamungo. The early breakthrough instilled confidence in the Kakamega-based side, though it also spurred a strong response from Sofapaka, known as 'Batoto ba Mungu' (Children of God).
Six minutes after the goal, Sofapaka nearly equalised when Douglas Kibet broke free, but Homeboyz goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe, who joined from Nairobi United in the off-season, reacted swiftly to deny him. Lopaga almost doubled his tally shortly after, but his effort went narrowly wide. Sofapaka continued to press, with Kibet and Donato Okello combining dangerously, though their attempts were off target. Hillary Otieno also came close to extending Homeboyz's lead, forcing a save from Kamungo before halftime.
The second half saw Sofapaka return with renewed vigour, piling early pressure. However, the Kakamega Homeboyz defence remained resolute, securing a second consecutive clean sheet for goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe.
Kakamega Homeboyz, promoted to the Kenyan Premier League in 2013, has a strong following in Kakamega and across Kenya. The club won the FKF Cup in 2023, earning a ticket to continental football. Sofapaka FC, formed fourteen years ago to nurture youth talent, has risen to become a top side in the Kenyan Premier League, winning the President's Cup in 2007 and the Nationwide League in 2008. They were also Kenyan Premier League champions in 2009.
The early win provides a significant morale boost for Kakamega Homeboyz, positioning them with four points from their opening two matches. For Sofapaka, the continued winless streak and position at the bottom of the table raise concerns about their performance in the current season.
Football enthusiasts will be keen to observe if Kakamega Homeboyz can maintain their momentum and build on this crucial win. Attention will also be on Sofapaka's strategy to reverse their fortunes and climb out of the relegation zone in upcoming fixtures.
Other FKF Premier League matches played on October 3, 2025, included AFC Leopards drawing 2-2 with Posta Rangers at Dandora Stadium.
