KWS translocates three endangered Rothschild giraffes from Naivasha to the Nairobi Giraffe Centre to boost genetic diversity and breeding efforts.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully translocated three young Rothschild giraffes from the Soysambu Conservancy in Naivasha to the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi. The high-stakes operation is part of a critical breeding program aimed at saving the subspecies from extinction.
The three sub-adults, aged between two and three years, were moved in a specialized convoy to the sanctuary in Karen. The Rothschild giraffe (also known as the Nubian giraffe) is one of the most endangered giraffe populations in the world, distinguishable by its pristine white "stockings" that stop at the knees.
"This translocation is not just about moving animals; it is about moving genes," a KWS spokesperson explained. By introducing new bloodlines to the Nairobi population, conservationists aim to prevent inbreeding—a silent killer in isolated wildlife groups. The Giraffe Centre has been pivotal in breeding these giants and reintroducing them into the wild.
The operation involved a seamless collaboration between KWS, the Giraffe Centre, and Soysambu Conservancy. It underscores the shift towards "metapopulation management," where isolated groups of animals are managed as one large herd through strategic moves.
Translocating a giraffe is a logistical marvel. Their height, fragile physiology, and tendency to panic make them difficult passengers. The success of this move is a testament to the expertise of Kenya's veterinary and capture teams.
For the three young giraffes, the leafy suburbs of Karen are now home. Their job? To eat, grow, and most importantly, contribute to the survival of their kind.
