Kwale, Kenya – May 19, 2025 – In a strong show of environmental leadership, Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has launched a countywide tree planting campaign aimed at combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.
10,000 Seedlings Planted to Kick Off Campaign
The campaign began in Matuga Sub-county, where Governor Achani flagged off the planting of 10,000 tree seedlings. The event marked the start of a wider reforestation effort designed to restore degraded landscapes and increase forest cover across the county.
Call for Community Participation
Governor Achani called on residents, schools, and civil society groups to join hands in ensuring the survival of the planted trees
“This campaign is not just about planting trees—it’s about securing our future, reclaiming our environment, and building climate resilience for generations to come,” she said.
Fighting Climate Change at the Grassroots
Kwale County has been facing the brunt of climate change impacts, including deforestation, erratic rainfall, and coastal erosion. The governor emphasized that planting trees is one of the most effective grassroots actions to combat these challenges.
Focus on Indigenous and Drought-Resistant Species
The seedlings being planted are a mix of indigenous and drought-tolerant species, carefully selected to thrive in Kwale’s diverse climate zones and support local biodiversity.
Campaign to Engage Youth and Institutions
The county government plans to collaborate with schools, public institutions, youth groups, and environmental NGOsto scale up the campaign and ensure community ownership of the project.
