Heightened Security and Economic Hopes

Security has been significantly enhanced in Kwale County ahead of the 2025 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Road Cycling African Championships, scheduled to run from Wednesday, November 19 to Sunday, November 23, 2025, in Diani. In a statement on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde assured that security agencies are on high alert to guarantee the safety of all participants and visitors for the continental event. The championship returns to Kenya for the second consecutive year, following a successful 2024 edition hosted in Eldoret.

Addressing previous security concerns in the region, Orinde noted that significant progress has been made in countering youth gangs, asserting that "Diani is safe" for the thousands of spectators and athletes expected. The event is poised to attract cyclists from at least 28 countries, providing a global platform for the coastal tourism hub, with broadcasts planned to air in more than 30 countries.

Government Commitment and Local Impact

The championship is a collaborative effort between the national government and the Kwale County administration. Speaking in Nairobi, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya emphasized the dual benefit of such events, stating, “Every sporting event boosts tourism and the local economy.” This sentiment was echoed by Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi, who highlighted the significant economic benefits anticipated for Kwale through tourism, hospitality, and trade.

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani confirmed that preparations are in advanced stages following a stakeholders' meeting at the county headquarters. “This championship places Kwale at the heart of continental sports tourism. We are committed to delivering a seamless and memorable experience for our visitors, athletes, and spectators,” Governor Achani stated on Tuesday, November 12, 2025. The event is expected to provide a major boost to local businesses, particularly in the hospitality and transport sectors.

Logistical Preparations and Race Details

To facilitate the smooth running of the races, several key roads in the region will face temporary closures and modifications. Governor Achani announced that speed bumps would be removed and traffic partially restricted on routes including Lotfa Beach Road, Mvindeni Beach Road, ABSA Beach Road, Kwale-Kombani Road, and sections of the Mombasa-Lungalunga Highway.

The five-day event will feature multiple race categories, including individual time trials and road races for elite men and women, under-23, and junior cyclists. The races will take place on circuits in and around Diani and Kwale town. In a move to engage the local community, organizers have also dedicated a day for a community fun event, allowing residents to participate with their own bicycles.

The Kenya Cycling Federation (KCF) has been pivotal in securing the hosting rights for the second year after Congo Brazzaville withdrew. The successful hosting of this championship is seen as another step in positioning Kenya as a premier destination for international sporting events, aligning with the government's broader strategy to diversify its tourism offerings beyond traditional athletics.
