Farmers in Kwale County are adopting climate-smart agricultural practices, such as planting drought-resistant crops and using water-conservation techniques, with training from the Climate Change Directorate to improve yields and enhance resilience against climate change.
Kwale, Kenya – Smallholder farmers across Kwale County are increasingly adopting innovative climate-smart agriculture practices, including the cultivation of drought-resistant crop varieties and the implementation of effective water-conservation techniques, to better cope with the adverse impacts of climate change. The initiative is being supported by the county's Climate Change Directorate, which is actively involved in training farmers in sustainable soil management, efficient irrigation methods, and other resilient farming practices designed to improve yields and enhance long-term agricultural sustainability.
County agricultural officials have reported encouraging results from pilot projects, with notable increases in crop productivity observed in areas where these climate-smart methods have been implemented. The overarching goal of the initiative is to extend these successful practices across the entire county. This expansion aims to ensure greater food security for the region's population and build resilience within the agricultural sector against the backdrop of changing and often unpredictable weather patterns, thereby safeguarding livelihoods and promoting sustainable development.
