In a move crossing political divides, former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has pledged to support Maurice Ogeta, the long-serving bodyguard of the late Raila Odinga, in launching an elite VIP security and training firm

In a gesture that transcends Kenya's often-bitter political lines, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced a significant pledge to support Maurice Ogeta, the highly respected and loyal former bodyguard of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, in establishing a new VIP protection and training company.
The announcement, made at Ogeta’s rural home in Uyoma, Siaya County, marks a new chapter for a man who spent nearly two decades as a silent, steadfast guardian of one of Kenya's most prominent political figures. This initiative is not merely about a new business; it’s a move to institutionalize Ogeta's vast experience and honour the legacy of his former boss, according to Kuria.
"I think Morris should impact other people. That is what Baba would have wanted," Kuria stated, using the affectionate term for Odinga. "If Baba were to come back and find Morris serving as a bodyguard to a small person like Moses Kuria, Baba would be very upset. Nobody that I know deserves Morris Ogeta, not one person."
The planned enterprise aims to professionalize the VIP protection sector by leveraging Ogeta's extensive, world-class training. Ogeta's career includes over 25 years in close protection, with specialized training in several countries, including Afghanistan, France, and notably, 15 years with Israel's special forces and 10 years with Russian forces. His expertise, Kuria argued, should be used to mentor a new generation of security professionals rather than being confined to protecting a single individual.
While specific financial details of the support were not disclosed, Kuria framed it as a collective effort. He noted that "friends and associates would come together to assist Ogeta in setting up the business, including support for training and operational capacity." The idea for the venture, Kuria clarified, came from Ogeta himself. "I didn't tell him what to do, I asked him what he wants to do and he told me," Kuria emphasized.
This development comes as Kenya's private security industry undergoes significant regulatory changes. Any new firm, including Ogeta's, will need to be licensed by the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSRA), which mandates stringent standards for training, vetting, and operations to enhance professionalism and accountability in a sector crucial to national security.
Maurice Ogeta became a nationally recognized figure for his unwavering loyalty, a bond described as being like that of a "near-son" to Odinga. He was a constant presence, from chaotic political rallies to Odinga's final days in India. His emotional tribute during the late leader's funeral resonated with many Kenyans, offering a glimpse into the profound personal relationship they shared beyond the call of duty.
Analysts suggest this cross-party support from a figure like Kuria, a former fierce critic of Odinga, is a significant moment in Kenyan politics, reflecting a potential shift towards post-Raila political realignments. However, details on the timeline for the firm's launch and its official name remain scarce as the initiative is still in its early stages.
The venture represents a critical transition for Ogeta, from a life of dedicated personal service to one of entrepreneurship. For Kenyans, it raises the question of how the skills honed protecting a political giant can be repurposed to enhance the safety and security of others, creating jobs and raising standards in a vital industry.
