Kenya Power has announced planned electricity interruptions for Wednesday, December 17, to facilitate network maintenance, affecting homes and businesses in Nandi, Nairobi, Embu, Makueni, Machakos, Kisumu, and Migori.

Thousands of homes and businesses across seven counties face scheduled power interruptions today, some lasting up to nine hours, as Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) undertakes planned network maintenance.
The utility company stated the temporary outages are necessary to upgrade and maintain power lines, connect new customers, and facilitate infrastructure projects. This action is conducted under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules, which permits scheduled disruptions for network improvements. For countless Kenyans, however, these interruptions translate directly into disrupted livelihoods and lost income.
The maintenance will affect various regions at different times, with most outages scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EAT. Residents in the listed areas are advised to plan for the disruption.
Key areas scheduled for maintenance include:
While KPLC frames the outages as essential for long-term stability, the short-term economic pain is significant. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of Kenya's economy, such disruptions are costly. Unreliable power can lead to damaged equipment, lost productivity, and missed business opportunities. Studies have shown that frequent power outages have a direct, negative impact on the profitability of Kenyan businesses, with the manufacturing sector being particularly vulnerable.
As the utility works to improve an aging grid, many business owners argue that more reliable power is fundamental to putting food on the table and securing Kenya's economic future.
