Kenya Pipeline Company's participation in the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon underscores a growing trend of corporate entities leveraging national sporting events to fund community development, directly supporting initiatives for youth employment and economic inclusion in Kenya.

NAIROBI, Kenya – A team of 53 employees from the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), led by Managing Director Joe Sang, participated in the 22nd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The company framed its involvement in the 10km and 21km races as a core component of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, aimed at giving back to the community.
The marathon, which attracted a sold-out field of 30,000 runners from 92 nations, is a significant fundraising platform for 'Futuremakers by Standard Chartered', a global initiative focused on tackling inequality and promoting economic inclusion for young people. This year's event aimed to raise over KES 75 million to support youth, women, and persons with disabilities through programs centered on education, employability, and entrepreneurship. In 2024, the marathon raised KES 48 million for the initiative, which has impacted over 55,000 young Kenyans since 2019.
KPC's participation highlights a strategic alignment of its community engagement with established national events. The state corporation's social investment arm, the KPC Foundation, focuses on education, health, environmental conservation, and sports for development. By joining the marathon, KPC directly contributes to the 'Futuremakers' cause, which includes programs like the Women in Tech accelerator that provides seed funding to female-founded startups and the RISE employability program, a KES 133 million initiative launched in 2024 to help young people enter the labour market.
The event drew other high-profile leaders, including Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, State Department for Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and Athletics Kenya Vice President Jinaro Kibet, demonstrating its importance as a nexus for corporate, government, and community interests.
Mr. Sang’s participation came just over a month after he set a new personal best at the Berlin Marathon on September 21, 2025, where he finished in 3:00:57. His running endeavors are linked to his personal initiative, the Joe Sang Foundation, which aims to raise KES 200 million to fund the education of vulnerable children. His presence, alongside GM-Finance Pius Mwendwa and other staff, signals a top-down commitment to corporate citizenship within the state agency.
KPC has previously been recognized for its CSR work, winning awards for being a top state corporation in Diversity, Inclusion & Sustainability. The company's engagement in activities like tree planting and its Inuka scholarship program for students with disabilities are part of a broader strategy to align its operations with national development goals, including Kenya's Vision 2030.
The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon serves as more than just a premier athletic competition; it is a critical fundraising vehicle that channels corporate and individual contributions towards addressing pressing social issues in Kenya. KPC's involvement, alongside 42 other sponsors who collectively raised a record KES 233 million for the 2025 event, exemplifies how public and private sector entities are increasingly integrating social impact goals into their operational ethos.
