Kenya Pipeline Company sets aside 290 million shares for staff at KES 9 each in its ongoing IPO, aiming to boost employee ownership and productivity.

The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has reserved a massive block of 290.54 million shares for its employees, aiming to turn its workforce into owners in one of the country's most significant privatization moves. The Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP) is part of the ongoing Initial Public Offering (IPO) that seeks to raise billions for the exchequer.
Employees will be able to purchase the shares at the offer price of KES 9.00 per unit, a rate analysts have termed "discounted" given the company's strategic value. The allocation represents approximately 1.5% of the company's authorized share capital, designed to align staff interests with the long-term profitability of the firm.
"The scheme is used to encourage employees to give their all as the company's success translates to financial rewards," KPC stated in its information memorandum. Beyond the ESOP, staff also have a priority option to purchase an additional 5% stake (590 million shares) from the general pool.
The lock-in period is set for a minimum of two years, ensuring that employees remain committed to the company's growth post-listing. This retention strategy is critical as KPC transitions from a purely state-owned entity to a publicly listed blue-chip on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).
The offer has generated buzz among retail investors, who have been allocated 60% of the shares on sale. With the entry price set at less than ten shillings—the price of a loose cigarette—the government is clearly targeting the "Wanjiku" investor.
However, the real test lies in the uptake. As KPC staff calculate their potential dividends, the broader market is watching to see if this IPO can break the listing drought and inject fresh liquidity into the NSE.
