A Ndumberi family is seeking financial support for burial costs and hospital bills after a domestic gas leak claimed a young girl's life and left her mother hospitalised, highlighting the severe financial risks households face during medical emergencies.

A family in Ndumberi, Kiambu County, has issued a public appeal for financial assistance following a domestic accident that resulted in the death of a young girl and the critical hospitalisation of her mother. The incident, identified as a gas leak, occurred in their home on Monday, 27 October 2025, according to a family representative.
The mother and daughter were initially rushed to Kiambu Hospital for first aid before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi for specialised care on Tuesday, 28 October 2025. Despite medical efforts, the young girl succumbed to complications from gas inhalation ten days later, on Friday, 7 November 2025. Her mother remains at KNH, where she is still receiving treatment.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke on Saturday, 15 November 2025, a relative, Cecilia Gicharu, detailed the family's mounting distress. The combined hospital bills have reportedly escalated, placing an immense financial burden on the surviving family members. According to the report, the family is facing a total bill of KSh 800,000, with friends having managed to raise less than KSh 30,000 so far. The daughter's bill alone was KSh 240,000, of which the Social Health Authority (SHA) reportedly paid KSh 44,000.
The situation is compounded by the family's vulnerable circumstances. Ms. Gicharu stated that the hospitalised mother and her sister, who is currently her primary caregiver, are orphans and allegedly face hostility from other relatives. This has left them with a limited support system to navigate the tragedy and its financial consequences.
The family has reported the incident to the Ndumberi police station and is now appealing to the public and well-wishers for support to clear the outstanding medical bills and to cover the funeral expenses for their deceased daughter. This case underscores the precarious position of many Kenyan families when faced with unexpected medical crises and the critical role of community support in such circumstances.
Further details on the specific circumstances of the gas leak are pending official investigation. The family has provided contact numbers (0729769281 and 0702489176) for those willing to offer assistance.
