The family of Frederick Kiprono, a 43-year-old Kenyan working in Louisiana, is preparing to repatriate his body after he was killed in a drive-by shooting. The incident has highlighted the risks faced by diaspora workers and prompted a community-led fundraising effort.

SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA – The family of a Kenyan Uber driver, Frederick Kiprono, 43, is coordinating with diaspora community organizations to repatriate his body to Kenya after he was shot and killed in Shreveport, Louisiana, on the evening of Wednesday, November 19, 2025, East Africa Time. The incident, which also claimed the life of an 18-year-old passenger, Tatum Ashley, and left a third individual critically injured, is being investigated by the Shreveport Police Department as a double homicide.
According to reports from local news outlets KSLA News 12 and KTBS 3 News, the shooting occurred on Clyde Fant Parkway. In connection with the incident, Shreveport police have arrested two teenagers, Travellia Lost, 17, and Joshua Thomas, 18. A third suspect, Dennis Scott, is reportedly wanted by police on two counts of second-degree murder. As of Thursday, November 27, 2025, the Shreveport Police Department has not released an official statement detailing the specific charges against the arrested individuals or a potential motive for the attack. FURTHER INVESTIGATION REQUIRED.
Mr. Kiprono, who originated from Moiben in Uasin Gishu County, had been living in the United States for several years and moved to Shreveport from Illinois in 2018 at the encouragement of his brother. Described by family and friends as a humble, hardworking, and dedicated man, he worked long hours as a ride-share driver to support his family in both Kenya and the U.S. His death has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan diaspora community.
In response to the tragedy, Mr. Kiprono's family, including his brother William Songok in Kenya and sister Everlyn Cheruto in Lexington, Kentucky, have initiated efforts to bring his body home for burial. A GoFundMe campaign was launched by a cousin, Eli Kosgei, to help cover the significant costs of repatriation and funeral expenses. The fundraiser is being supported by Gotabgaa International Inc., a global organization for the Kalenjin diaspora, which has called for prayers and financial solidarity from the community. The organization's president, Janeth Ngeno-Rutto, issued a statement expressing profound sadness and appealing for collective support to give Mr. Kiprono a dignified farewell.
A memorial service was held in Dallas, Texas, where his body was transported before the planned repatriation to Kenya.
The killing of Frederick Kiprono has underscored the inherent risks faced by many Kenyans working abroad, particularly in service and gig economy roles. Community representatives have noted that the loss is felt widely, reflecting the shared experiences and vulnerabilities of immigrants striving to build better lives while supporting their families from afar. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges, including exposure to violent crime, that members of the diaspora can encounter.
The U.S. has seen other instances of violence against ride-share drivers, with this case adding to the grim statistics of gun violence in the country. The National Gun Violence Memorial, an online archive, has documented Mr. Kiprono's death as part of its record of lives lost to firearms. The coordinated response by the Kenyan community in the U.S. to support the grieving family highlights the crucial role of diaspora networks in times of crisis, providing both financial and emotional support across continents.
The family continues to appeal for support as they navigate the logistical and emotional challenges of repatriating their loved one. Friends and community members in Kenya are preparing to receive his remains once arrangements are finalized.
