Kenyan soldiers serving in the UN peacekeeping mission in eastern DR Congo have been awarded UN service medals for professionalism and community engagement, with commanders hailing them as the best contingent in the Force Intervention Brigade.
Goma, DR Congo – Kenyan soldiers serving under the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) have been awarded UN service medals for their outstanding performance in safeguarding civilians and supporting stability efforts in the country’s volatile eastern region.
The medals were presented to troops of the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 4) by MONUSCO Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Ulisses de Mesquita Gomes, who commended their resilience, professionalism, and strong rapport with local communities.
Brigadier Richard Chagonapanja, commander of the Force Intervention Brigade, lauded the Kenyan unit as the brigade’s “best team,” citing their key role in:
Conducting deterrence patrols to keep armed groups at bay.
Securing humanitarian corridors to ensure safe passage for aid deliveries.
Assisting displaced families uprooted by conflict and violence.
Lt. Col. Simon Seda, commander of KENQRF, paid tribute to the sacrifices of his troops who left their families behind to serve in the conflict zone. He pledged continued discipline, compassion, and operational readiness in partnership with Congolese communities.
Kenya began deploying quick reaction troops to MONUSCO in 2020, reinforcing the mission’s ability to respond rapidly to militia attacks. The units are trained to counter fast-moving threats and stabilise hotspots before violence escalates.
The recognition comes at a delicate time, as MONUSCO faces mounting international and local pressure to scale down its presence, despite persistent militia activity and inter-communal clashes in the region.
Analysts say the medal parade highlights Kenya’s growing stature in regional security and peacekeeping diplomacy. By contributing highly trained forces, Kenya not only strengthens the UN’s capacity in the DRC but also demonstrates its commitment to continental solidarity and stability.
For the soldiers, the honour boosts morale and underscores the importance of their mission in one of Africa’s most complex conflict theatres. “This recognition is a reminder that Kenya’s role goes beyond its borders—we are part of the global effort to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities,” a Kenyan defence official noted.
Kenyan officials reaffirmed that their troops will remain engaged in peacekeeping operations while supporting parallel diplomatic initiatives aimed at securing a lasting settlement in eastern Congo. Observers stress that while MONUSCO may eventually downsize, Kenya’s continued involvement signals a long-term commitment to regional peace.
