Nairobi United and Kenya Police FC are on the cusp of making history in CAF competitions, but their ambitions face a stern test against formidable North African opponents, a region where Kenyan clubs have historically struggled.

Kenyan football stands at a pivotal moment as two of its clubs, Nairobi United and Kenya Police FC, are just one match away from securing berths in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup and CAF Champions League, respectively. This would mark a historic achievement, as it would be the first time Kenya has clubs competing in the group stages of both continental competitions in the same season.
Nairobi United, making their debut in the CAF Confederation Cup, hold a significant 2-0 advantage over Tunisian giants Etoile Sportive du Sahel, following their first-leg victory at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday, October 19, 2025. Goals from Ovella Ochieng and John Otieno secured the crucial win for the 'Naibois'. They are set to play the return leg at the Stade Olympique de Sousse in Tunisia on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
Meanwhile, Kenya Police FC faces a tougher challenge in the CAF Champions League. They trail Sudanese club Al Hilal Omdurman by a solitary goal, having lost 1-0 in the first leg at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. The law enforcers will travel to Benghazi, Libya, for the second leg at the Benina Martyrs Stadium on Friday, October 24, 2025, aiming to overturn the deficit.
The path to continental glory for Kenyan clubs has often been hampered by a poor record against North African opposition. Historically, Kenyan teams have won only once in 44 matches against North African clubs in CAF competitions, with another solitary win against a Sudanese club. This lone victory against a North African team came in October 2021 when Gor Mahia defeated Al Ahli Merowe of Sudan in Suez, Egypt, during the 2021-22 CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite this daunting statistic, Nairobi United's recent 2-0 triumph over Etoile Sportive du Sahel is a notable exception. They are only the fourth Kenyan club to secure a win against a North African team in their first attempt, following Luo Union in 1977, Utalii in 1998, and Bandari in 2019-20. Among these, only Bandari managed to advance over two legs.
The stakes are incredibly high for both Kenyan clubs. Qualification for the group stages of the CAF Champions League would guarantee Kenya Police FC a minimum of USD 700,000 (approximately KSh 90.3 million). For Nairobi United, reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stages would secure them at least USD 400,000 (approximately KSh 51.6 million). Should both teams qualify, a minimum of KSh 141.9 million would be injected into Kenyan football by CAF.
Nairobi United's journey to this stage has been remarkable. Promoted to the FKF Premier League, they clinched the FKF Cup by defeating Gor Mahia 2-1, becoming only the second promoted team in Kenyan football history to achieve this feat. Their continental debut saw them overcome Uganda's NEC FC on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw.
Both Nairobi United's and Kenya Police FC's home legs were played behind closed doors at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. This decision was due to logistical and security concerns, including damage to the Nyayo National Stadium pitch after a national mourning period for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and broadcasting rights disputes.
The absence of fans in the stadium and limited live television coverage has been a point of concern for Kenyan football enthusiasts, highlighting the demand for greater accessibility to continental matches.
All eyes will be on Sousse and Benghazi this weekend. Nairobi United, with their 2-0 lead, will aim to maintain their tactical discipline and potentially score an away goal to solidify their position. Kenya Police FC faces a more uphill battle, requiring a strong offensive performance while remaining defensively resolute to overcome Al Hilal. Their ability to manage the pressure and hostile away environments will be crucial in determining their fate.
