Kenya to Co-Host CHAN 2024, Targets Title Win Ahead of AFCON 2027

Nairobi, Kenya – May 26 — Kenya is ramping up preparations to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya reaffirming the government’s commitment to both infrastructure readiness and competitive performance from the national team, Harambee Stars.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Mvurya confirmed that Kenya will jointly host the prestigious tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania in August. He noted that major renovations of key stadiums across the country are already underway to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

“The CHAN tournament is a historic opportunity for Kenya, not just to host but to win on home soil,” Mvurya said. “Our focus now is on ensuring the locally-based Harambee Stars squad is fully prepared, both physically and mentally, to rise to the occasion.”

The Sports Ministry, he added, is intensifying training efforts and providing logistical support for the team as it builds toward a strong showing in the tournament. Mvurya expressed confidence that a CHAN victory would act as a vital springboard for Kenya’s ambitions in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country is also set to co-host.

“We must use this moment to build momentum,” he urged. “With proper facilities, technical support, and the backing of our fans, there is no reason we cannot lift the CHAN title and send a powerful signal ahead of AFCON 2027.”

The CHAN tournament, unlike the AFCON, features players drawn exclusively from domestic leagues, making it a crucial platform for showcasing local football talent. Mvurya also hinted at broader government investment in youth football programs and sports infrastructure to sustain long-term national success.
