Kericho, Kenya — 2025-09-12 18:45 EAT. Kenya Power has announced routine maintenance work that will cause day-long power outages across five counties on Monday, September 15, 2025, as engineers service equipment and upgrade electricity lines
Kericho County: Jamji, Changoi, and Kipkeryen areas will be without power from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., affecting tea factories, farms, and nearby villages
West Pokot County: Chewoyet, Kesogon, Ortum, Sebit, and Sigor will experience outages during the same hours, impacting schools, markets, and homes
Murang’a County: Ikumbi and Kigumo residents will also have no electricity between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Nyeri County: Gichira and Kiawaithanji will be out from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Kiambu County: Kihumo and Magana will have outages between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Reason: Kenya Power says the planned interruptions are needed for line servicing, equipment inspection, and system upgrades to reduce unplanned outages and improve national grid reliability
Advisory: Consumers are urged to switch off appliances during the outages and treat all lines as live even when power is off to avoid accidents.
Economic impact: Tea factories, farms, and markets may face temporary disruptions in affected areas.
Public services: Schools and health facilities are advised to make contingency plans, including standby power where possible.
Safety: Residents warned not to tamper with lines or assume they are safe during outages.
Confirmation from Kenya Power once maintenance is complete on Monday evening.
Any follow-up notices on extended outages if work overruns scheduled hours.
