Nairobi police say the fatal shooting of a lawmaker appears to have been a targeted, premeditated attack

Kenyan MP Charles Were Fatally Shot in Apparent Targeted Attack
Police Say Killing Was Premeditated, Not a Random Act
NAIROBI, May 1, 2025 – Kenyan authorities say the fatal shooting of Member of Parliament Charles Were in Nairobi was a targeted and premeditated attack, not a random act of violence.
Samuel Mutea, the head of Nairobi police, confirmed on Wednesday that Were’s body was discovered in his car late Tuesday night, parked in traffic along a busy route in the capital.
“Initial findings indicate that the assailant may have known Mr. Were’s movements and deliberately waited to strike while he was stuck in traffic,” said Mutea.
Details of the Incident
According to the police report:
-
Were appeared to have been shot multiple times at close range.
-
No signs of robbery were evident, strengthening the theory that the motive was not theft.
-
CCTV footage from nearby buildings is being reviewed as part of ongoing investigations.
Reactions from Leaders and the Public
The killing of the MP has sent shockwaves through the political establishment. Lawmakers across party lines condemned the attack and called for swift justice.
“This is a dark day for our democracy. No Kenyan leader should have to fear for their life,” said National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
Civil society organizations have also voiced concern, urging authorities to enhance protection for public officials and investigate any political motivations behind the shooting.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal
Police have not disclosed any suspects or possible leads but emphasized that a multi-agency task force is now handling the case. Investigators are also reviewing Charles Were’s recent public engagements and political activity to determine if there were threats made against him.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could aid the investigation.
