Kenya Cup clubs set a two-week deadline for the KRU board to fix governance issues or face an SGM.
Nakuru, Kenya — Facing mounting protest from affiliate clubs, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has been given a stark ultimatum: enact sweeping reforms or risk a Special General Meeting (SGM) within 14 days.
A coalition of KRU member clubs, including Moi University Arsonists RFC, Ngong Warriors, and Meru RFC, have demanded transparency and accountability following unresolved financial governance concerns.
In formal letters dated 27 June 2025, the clubs invoked Clause 10.22.4 of the KRU Constitution, requesting access to the union’s books of account. The KRU Secretariat acknowledged receipt, but no response has followed—even after a firm deadline of 30 June 2025.
The affliates express deep frustration over boardroom dysfunction. Their grievances gained traction in the aftermath of a May SGM that forced out former chairman Sasha Mutai on allegations of mismanagement and mishandling of KSh 13.2 million tied to Safari Sevens tournaments.
Although Mutai’s suspension was later ruled illegal by the Sports Disputes Tribunal, he resigned on 30 May 2025, citing entrenched politics and lack of transparency.
Speaking at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds, Ngong Warriors Chairman Victor Wachira warned that failure by the KRU CEO to grant access to financial records and provide formal written responses by 9 July 2025 would trigger club-led action. Their options include convening a Special General Meeting or invoking other constitutional provisions.
They decry not only financial opacity, but a broader institutional decline—pointing to internal strife, weakening player welfare, and subpar performance at national levels.

A failure to cooperate may trigger a Special General Meeting within 14 days, where clubs could push for board reshuffles or leadership changes.
The situation underscores larger issues of democratic oversight, operational transparency, and financial integrity at the heart of Kenyan rugby.
Kenyan rugby stands at a pivotal moment. If KRU leadership fails to honor constitutional obligations and meet clubs’ demands, a binding SGM could unfold—reshaping the union’s governance and determining whether the sport’s reported decline is reversed or entrenched.
