Kenyan authorities have been put on alert after forecasts predicted unusually heavy rains and warm temperatures this week. The IGAD climate centre warned that parts of central Kenya could see up to 200mm of rain in a day, heightening flood risks and pushing daytime highs toward 32°C.
Nairobi, Kenya – July 16:
East African weather forecasters have issued a warning for unusually heavy rainfall and elevated temperatures across parts of Kenya this week. According to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), central and northwestern regions of the country could receive up to 200 millimeters of rain in a single day—far exceeding seasonal norms.
Temperatures are also expected to rise significantly, with some highland areas forecasted to experience highs of 32°C, a notable increase for the season.
The alert comes in the wake of recent flooding incidents across Kenya and neighboring countries. ICPAC has urged residents in flood-prone zones, particularly lowland and riverine areas, to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flash floods. Meteorologists have linked the unusual conditions to persistent weather instability in the Horn of Africa.
The Kenya Meteorological Department is set to release county-level alerts to help communities stay informed. In the meantime, disaster response teams and humanitarian agencies are on standby in case of emergencies.
While some farmers welcome the rainfall after a prolonged dry spell, officials caution that such extreme weather shifts could disrupt agriculture and infrastructure.
