With the nationwide military recruitment drive concluding, the Vice Chief of Defence Forces' tour of coastal centres underscores the military's public commitment to a fair and transparent process, crucial for bolstering national security and public trust.

As the 2025 Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) nationwide recruitment for General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables concludes its final day on Saturday, October 25, 2025, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces (VCDF) Lieutenant General John Omenda has commended the exercise for its integrity and professionalism. This recruitment drive, which commenced on October 13, 2025, is a critical annual exercise for replenishing and strengthening the nation's military capabilities.
On Friday, October 24, 2025, Lt Gen Omenda visited recruitment centres in the Coastal Region, including Likoni and Kilifi, to oversee the process. His visit was part of a wider monitoring effort by KDF leadership to ensure strict adherence to fairness and transparency standards. “The recruitment teams have maintained professionalism, integrity, and transparency throughout the process,” Lt Gen Omenda stated, acknowledging that strong community support was vital for the smooth execution of the exercise.
This year's recruitment has been notable for its increased reliance on technology to curb corruption and ensure fairness. The KDF deployed a digital Recruitment Management System for biometric data capture and document scanning, a move designed to eliminate the use of fraudulent calling letters and minimize human manipulation. Speaking in Murang'a earlier in the week, Senior Recruiting Officer Gabriel Kotikot confirmed the system manages the entire workflow, from application to the automated selection of successful candidates, who are then notified via email and SMS. This digital-first approach aligns with public statements from senior military leaders, including the Chief of the Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, who warned on October 9, 2025, that any officer caught engaging in malpractice would face “immediate and severe disciplinary action.” The Ministry of Defence has emphasized that the recruitment is free of charge and has urged the public to report any instances of bribery to the authorities.
The nationwide exercise aims to enlist personnel across several categories. The physical recruitment at local centres focused on General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables. Meanwhile, online applications for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, and Tradesmen/women were concluded on October 12, 2025. Lt Gen Omenda confirmed that the shortlisting for these online applicants has been finalized, with successful candidates to be notified for interviews scheduled to begin in November.
The general requirements for all applicants include being a Kenyan citizen with a valid National ID, having no criminal record, and meeting specific age, height, and weight criteria. For instance, GSO Cadets and General Duty Recruits must be between 18 and 26 years old. Academic qualifications vary by role, with GSO Cadets requiring a minimum KCSE mean grade of B (Plain), with at least a C+ in English, Mathematics, and one science subject.
Lt Gen John Omenda, who assumed the role of VCDF on May 2, 2024, has extensive experience in the KDF, having previously served as the Commander of the Kenya Air Force. His oversight of the recruitment process highlights its importance to military leadership. The annual intake is essential not only for filling vacancies but also for ensuring the KDF reflects the national diversity of Kenya, with recruitment taking place across all 47 counties. Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has stated that the exercise is crucial for replenishing ranks, expanding emerging units, and strengthening the country's overall defence capabilities in a fair and inclusive manner.
The KDF leadership has consistently reiterated its commitment to a merit-based selection process, acknowledging that while turnout is high, only the most qualified candidates who meet the rigorous standards will be selected to serve the nation.
