KCB FC bounced back to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks in a SportPesa Premier League match, securing their second win of the 2025/2026 season. The result prolongs Sharks' search for their first league win.
KCB FC defeated Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 in a tightly contested SportPesa Premier League match held at Kasarani Annex on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM EAT. Richard Omondi's first-half goal proved decisive, ending KCB's recent winless streak and extending Kariobangi Sharks' struggle for a maiden victory this season.
The Bankers, led by head coach Robert Matano, entered the match keen to recover from a 1-0 defeat to Mathare United in their previous outing. Kariobangi Sharks, under coach William Muluya, were aiming to secure maximum points after registering back-to-back draws in their opening two matches of the 2025/2026 SportPesa League season.
The game began with both teams displaying considerable energy, but KCB created more significant threats in the Sharks' defensive area. A golden opportunity arose for KCB in the 16th minute when Mathias Isogoli delivered a cross, but Tedja Wanumbi failed to control it cleanly, allowing the Sharks' defence to clear.
Kariobangi Sharks responded nine minutes later with a promising attack from the left wing. Zablon Kutela drove into the box and crossed to Markvivan Kesa, who, after turning his marker, fired the ball over the bar.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Richard Omondi, capitalizing on a superb cross from December Kisakah, unleashed a powerful shot past Sharks' goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa, securing the lone goal of the match.
In the second half, KCB focused on maintaining their lead while seeking opportunities to extend it. Coach Matano made a triple substitution in the 65th minute, bringing on Stephen Etyang, Maruti Dennis, and Philemon Nyakwaka to maintain intensity and control.
Despite these changes and proactive substitutions by Sharks' coach Muluya, Kariobangi Sharks struggled to convert their opportunities into goals. Muluya acknowledged the difficulty in breaking down KCB's defence and expressed disappointment over missed chances, but remained optimistic about the team's spirit and commitment to improvement.
KCB coach Robert Matano praised Omondi's composure and vision, highlighting the significance of his goal. He also emphasized the importance of squad rotation for a long season. The win provides KCB with renewed confidence and moves them up in the SportPesa Premier League standings.
For Kariobangi Sharks, the defeat underscores the need for sharper finishing and greater tactical cohesion. Coach Muluya stressed that learning from this loss would be crucial for climbing the league table.
Kariobangi Sharks' inability to secure a win in their opening matches could impact team morale and their standing in the league if not addressed promptly. For KCB, maintaining this winning momentum will be crucial for their aspirations in the 2025/2026 SportPesa Premier League.
Attention will now turn to Kariobangi Sharks' next fixtures as they seek to break their winless streak and improve their goal conversion rate. KCB will aim to build on this victory and continue their climb up the league table.
