Kenya's national U17 team advances to the CECAFA semi-finals, keeping hopes alive for a spot in the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations after a decisive victory in Ethiopia.

Kenya’s Junior Stars have booked their place in the semi-finals of the CECAFA U17 AFCON qualifiers after a commanding 2-0 victory over South Sudan on Monday, 24th November 2025, at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Goals in each half from Derrick Khatete and Trevor Nasasiro ensured William Muluya’s side progressed to the knockout stages of the regional tournament, which serves as the pathway to the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Kenyan side entered the match needing a positive result to secure their advancement and displayed intent from the outset. Their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute when Derrick Khatete found the back of the net, giving the Junior Stars a crucial lead. Reports vary slightly on the scorer, with some crediting David Wanyonyi, but Khatete is named in multiple independent accounts. Following the goal, Kenya maintained control, creating several opportunities to double their advantage. Nicholas Acholla tested the South Sudanese goalkeeper with a direct free-kick in the 24th minute, and Armstrong Omondi also forced a save from a set-piece.
South Sudan’s most significant opportunity came in the 54th minute when David Darako broke through on goal, but his shot went wide, letting the Junior Stars off the hook. Despite South Sudan's efforts to get back into the game in the second half, Kenya’s defence, marshalled by goalkeeper Georgian Chris Omondi, held firm to secure a clean sheet.
As the match approached its conclusion, Kenya sealed the victory. In the 89th minute, Trevor Nasasiro, who has been in fine form, scored his second goal of the tournament. The goal was assisted by substitute Brighton Nacheri, who made a significant impact after coming on. The 2-0 result confirmed Kenya's progression to the semi-finals.
The CECAFA U17 Championship is a critical tournament for youth development in the East Africa region. The top three teams from this competition will earn a spot to represent the zone at the U17 AFCON finals. Kenya's journey in the group stage has been one of steady improvement. They started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Somalia on Tuesday, 18th November, followed by a resilient 2-1 comeback victory over Rwanda on Friday, 21st November.
Head Coach William Muluya praised his team's resilience and tactical discipline after the win against South Sudan. Speaking after the match, he acknowledged the strength of the opposition, particularly from set-pieces, but was pleased with his team's focus. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed also congratulated the team on their performance and qualification for the semis.
With the win, Kenya moved to seven points in Group A, level with hosts Ethiopia, who have also secured their semi-final spot. The Junior Stars will face Ethiopia in their final group match on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, to determine the group winner. The match is scheduled for 3:00 PM EAT.
The performance of the Junior Stars is a significant boost for Kenyan football, showcasing a promising generation of talent. Their progress will be closely watched by the Kenyan public as they continue their quest for continental glory and a potential place at the U17 World Cup.
