The JSC begins interviews for 20 High Court judge positions today, with high-profile names like Priscilla Nyokabi and Letizia Wachira on the shortlist.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has today commenced the rigorous process of interviewing candidates for 20 vacancies in the High Court of Kenya. The recruitment drive, which aims to clear the backlog of cases and bolster judicial capacity, has attracted a list of 100 shortlisted candidates, including prominent legal and political figures.
Among the headline names facing the panel is former Nyeri Woman Representative Priscilla Nyokabi and current Supreme Court Registrar Letizia Wachira. Their inclusion highlights the intense competition for these prestigious constitutional offices. The interviews, scheduled to run until March 4, 2026, will take place at the JSC offices in Nairobi. The commission has invited public participation, asking citizens to submit any memoranda regarding the candidates to ensure a transparent vetting process.
This recruitment drive comes barely days after President William Ruto swore in 15 new Court of Appeal judges, signaling a concerted effort by the state to operationalize the judiciary fully. The High Court, being the primary court of unlimited original jurisdiction, is critical in the delivery of justice. A shortage of judges has long been cited as a primary cause of delayed justice in Kenya.
The inclusion of politically exposed persons like Nyokabi is likely to draw public scrutiny regarding the independence of the judiciary. However, the JSC has maintained that merit and integrity will be the sole criteria for selection. As the panelists take their seats, the legal fraternity waits to see who will make the cut to join the High Court bench during this pivotal moment in Kenya’s judicial history.
