The Spud Truck returns to Jersey to feed families during half-term, highlighting hidden poverty in the wealthy island nation.

A mobile catering unit known as the "Spud Truck" has returned to Jersey's streets this half-term, providing free hot meals to families struggling with the rising cost of living. Run by the charity Caring Cooks, the initiative highlights a growing demand for food aid in one of the world's wealthiest jurisdictions.
The bright blue van, parked at Haut Vallee School, has become a beacon of hope for families in St Helier. Between 16:30 and 17:30 GMT daily, the truck serves jacket potatoes with various fillings, offering a nutritious stopgap for children who would otherwise miss out on the free school meals they rely on during term time. For many, this simple meal is the difference between going to bed full or hungry.
While Jersey is often associated with offshore finance and luxury, the reality for low-income families is starkly different. Yvonne Corbin, a representative from Caring Cooks, described the visceral impact of the project. "These children come and see us and know us by name," she said, recounting a moment where a young boy finished his potato and declared it "the best day of his life." Such testimonials underscore the severe pressure on household budgets, mirrored by similar challenges in Kenya where the "Dishi na County" programme aims to plug the same gap for Nairobi's learners.
The initiative is not just about food; it provides a safe, social space for children during the holidays. The charity has organized activities alongside the food service, creating a festival-like atmosphere that destigmatizes the act of receiving aid. Project bosses noted that the turnout has been consistent, reflecting an entrenched need that extends beyond the school term.
"It's so lovely, but that is how much enjoyment they get out of it," Corbin added, emphasizing that the joy of a warm meal is universal, whether in St Helier or Nairobi's informal settlements.
