SHINYANGA: INVESTORS have been urged to step forward and invest in basketball to help the sport reach greater heights in the country.
The call was made by Julius George, a player and patron of Kahama Sixers Basketball Team from Shinyanga Region. He argues that Tanzania's basketball scene is steadily gaining momentum but requires stronger financial backing to sustain its growth across the East African landscape.
Investment is the bedrock of athletic success, not just in Tanzania, but across the entire East African community including Kenya. Without a sustainable injection of funds, grassroot structures will collapse before producing regional talents capable of rivaling global superpowers.
George noted that improved investment and sound administration within the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) would significantly enhance the quality and competitiveness of the sport.
“Investment is the foundation of success in any sport. Without sufficient funds, you cannot build a strong league, organise quality competitions or properly motivate players,” he stated during his regional address.
According to George, the entry of serious investors would bring new hope to Tanzanian basketball by strengthening domestic leagues, increasing competition and attracting emerging talent from across the country. Such developments create cross-border opportunities, potentially allowing players to transition into the Kenyan basketball premier leagues or even secure lucrative college scholarships abroad.
In a related development, George congratulated Hasheem Thabeet following his election as President of TBF, expressing optimism about the future of the game under the new leadership.
He said Thabeet's international exposure and professional playing career at the highest level placed him in a strong position to introduce meaningful reforms. The East African community watches closely, knowing a stronger Tanzanian league inevitably raises the competitive ceiling of the region.
He further emphasised the need for the federation to prioritise the strengthening of youth leagues, empowerment of coaches and establishment of specialised talent development centres to raise standards from the grassroots level. A robust youth system could see an influx of cross-border tournaments, pitting young Tanzanian stars against Kenyan academies, fostering a vibrant regional basketball economy worth millions of shillings (KES).
"We believe he will bring reforms in management, youth development and create more opportunities for international competitions. This is the moment for East Africa to shine on the hardwood," concluded George.
