India and the EU sign a historic trade deal after 18 years, slashing tariffs on 90% of goods and creating a massive new economic bloc to counter global volatility.

In a geopolitical masterstroke, India and the European Union have finally signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), ending nearly two decades of diplomatic wrangling. The deal, described by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as "historic," covers 25% of the global GDP and promises to reshape the global economic order.
The agreement is a massive win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Make in India" initiative and a strategic pivot for Europe, which is seeking to diversify its supply chains away from China. The pact slashes tariffs on over 90% of traded goods, opening the floodgates for European cars and wines into the Indian market, while granting Indian textiles and professionals unprecedented access to the EU.
For years, the stumbling block was India’s protectionist tariffs, particularly on automobiles, which could run as high as 100%. Under the new deal, these will be phased down to between 10% and 40%, a concession that had previously seemed impossible. In return, India gains duty-free access for its industrial goods, a critical boost for its manufacturing sector.
The "Mother of All Deals" also includes a robust chapter on sustainable development and digital trade, ensuring that this partnership is future-proof. "We are not just trading goods; we are trading trust," PM Modi remarked at the signing ceremony.
For the average consumer in Mumbai or Munich, the effects will soon be tangible—cheaper German cars in India, and more affordable Indian apparel in Europe. But the real story is the shifting center of gravity in global trade.
After 18 years of "will they, won't they," the elephant and the lion have finally decided to dance.
