Electoral body targets millions of new voters in ward-based drive

The machinery of democracy is grinding back into motion. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has officially designated March 29 as the launch date for a comprehensive mass voter registration exercise, signaling the start of the long countdown to the 2027 General Election.
This announcement is more than a procedural update; it is a strategic maneuver to enfranchise millions of Kenyans who remain on the periphery of the political process. With a target of registering over six million new voters, the commission is attempting to reverse the trend of voter apathy that has plagued recent polls. The success of this drive will likely determine the shape of the electorate and, consequently, the trajectory of the nation’s leadership for the next five years.
In a departure from previous centralized approaches, Commission Chairperson Erastus Ethekon has revealed that this registration drive will be aggressively ward-based. By taking the biometric kits deep into the villages and estates, the commission aims to eliminate the logistical barriers that have historically disenfranchised rural and peri-urban populations. This granular approach acknowledges that the battle for numbers will be won not in the cities, but at the grassroots level.
The commission has been under immense pressure to clean up the voter register and ensure inclusivity. The decision to roll out mass registration now, well ahead of the election year, suggests a desire to avoid the last-minute rushes and technical glitches that have marred previous exercises. Ethekon emphasized that the commission is working round the clock to ensure systems are go by the end of March.
Political analysts view this registration drive as the first real test of the reconstituted commission’s capacity. A successful rollout will build public confidence in the electoral body, which is crucial for the legitimacy of the 2027 outcome. Conversely, technical failures or low turnout would arm critics and cast a long shadow over the upcoming polls.
As political parties begin to mobilize their strongholds to turn out in large numbers, the IEBC stands as the arbiter of access. The coming months will reveal whether this ambitious target of six million new voters is a realistic goal or a bureaucratic pipe dream. For now, the date is set, and the clock is ticking.
