Seventy Kenyan children receive free hearing aids at KNH, a life-changing donation that allows them to hear for the first time and join mainstream schools.
The corridors of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) were filled with tears of joy yesterday, but for once, they were not tears of pain. In a heartwarming conclusion to a medical camp, dozens of children received the ultimate New Year gift: the ability to hear.
The Starkey Hearing Foundation, in partnership with KNH, fitted 70 children with customized hearing aids, transforming their lives in an instant. For many, like 10-year-old Brian, it was the first time they had heard their own laughter. "He just froze, then he smiled," his mother recounted. "He pointed outside and said, 'Mama, birds!' I broke down."
Hearing impairment is a hidden disability in Kenya, often leading to stigma and exclusion from school. With a single hearing aid costing upwards of Sh50,000, it remains out of reach for the majority. This donation, worth millions, bridges that gap.
