Homa Bay Development Spree: Government Fast-Tracks Key Projects Ahead of Madaraka Day

Homa Bay Gears Up for Madaraka Day with Major Infrastructure Projects

Homa Bay, Kenya — As Kenya prepares to mark Madaraka Day on June 1, the national government has accelerated a series of high-impact infrastructure and development projects in Homa Bay County, positioning the region as a centerpiece of national progress and investment.

At the heart of the initiatives is the KSh 500 million renovation of Raila Odinga Stadium, which is being transformed into a state-of-the-art 12,000-seat sports complex. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, accompanied by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, recently toured the construction site to assess progress. The stadium is expected to host key events during the national holiday and serve as a long-term asset for sports development in the region.

Complementing the stadium upgrade is the nearly completed KSh 673 million Kendu Bay Water and Sanitation Project, designed to provide clean, reliable water access to thousands of residents. The project is part of an ongoing effort to improve basic services and promote public health across the county.

In the transport sector, the KSh 3.7 billion upgrade of the Kadel–Ramba road is currently underway, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, easing trade, and reducing travel times for local communities. The road project is expected to be a game-changer for economic activity and access to essential services in the area.

Government officials say these developments underscore a broader push to bring tangible transformation to Homa Bay and the greater Nyanza region, showcasing President William Ruto’s commitment to equitable regional development ahead of the national holiday.

“These projects reflect our dedication to uplifting the lives of Kenyans in all parts of the country,” said a senior official involved in the Madaraka Day planning committee. “Homa Bay is not only hosting this year’s celebrations — it is also becoming a symbol of progress.”

The flurry of activity comes as national attention turns to Homa Bay, which will host thousands of guests, dignitaries, and citizens for the commemoration of Kenya’s self-governance milestone. Security, logistics, and beautification efforts are also being scaled up to ensure a successful event.
