Intense rainfall in Nairobi on Sunday evening led to widespread flash flooding in several low-lying areas, including Eastlands and Lang’ata, causing significant traffic disruptions and inundating homes. County emergency crews are working to assist affected residents.
Nairobi, Kenya – Intense and sustained rainfall experienced across Nairobi on Sunday evening resulted in significant flash flooding in several low-lying parts of the county. Numerous streets and residential areas, particularly in Eastlands and parts of Lang’ata, were temporarily submerged by the rapidly rising waters, causing widespread traffic chaos and leading to the inundation of homes.
Many citizens found themselves struggling to navigate the flooded streets and reach safety as water levels rose quickly, overwhelming drainage systems in affected neighborhoods. The Nairobi County government promptly deployed emergency response crews to the hardest-hit areas. These teams are currently engaged in efforts to clear blocked drains, assess the extent of the damage, and provide assistance to residents trapped or displaced by the floodwaters. County officials have also issued warnings, noting that the incidence of urban flooding appears to be increasing, a trend attributed to the combined effects of climate change, unplanned urbanization, and inadequate drainage infrastructure. They have urged for renewed focus and investment in improving urban planning and drainage systems to prevent future damage and mitigate risks to residents.
