Kenya’s Ministry of Health has deployed emergency response teams to Nairobi’s Kibera and Mathare slums to control a cholera outbreak, with over 100 cases reported. Efforts include treatment, contact tracing, and distribution of water purification supplies.
Nairobi, Kenya – The Ministry of Health announced on Monday the immediate implementation of emergency measures aimed at containing a recent cholera outbreak reported in Nairobi’s densely populated informal settlements of Kibera and Mathare. According to ministry officials, over 100 suspected cases of cholera were reported in these areas within the last week, prompting an urgent public health response.
Rapid response teams, comprising healthcare workers and public health officers, have been dispatched to the affected areas. These teams are focused on providing immediate medical treatment to those infected, actively tracing contacts to prevent further spread, and intensifying community awareness campaigns centered on crucial hygiene practices and the importance of using safe, treated water. The ministry is also coordinating the distribution of water purification tablets and other essential sanitation supplies to households in Kibera and Mathare. While there have been no officially confirmed fatalities from this specific outbreak to date, health officials have issued a strong warning that the situation could escalate rapidly without swift and comprehensive intervention. Residents are being strongly urged to boil all drinking water, maintain high standards of personal and environmental sanitation, and seek immediate medical attention if cholera symptoms appear.
