League leaders Gor Mahia suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to struggling FKF Premier League newcomers APS Bomet at Nyayo National Stadium, raising questions about squad depth and focus ahead of the Mashemeji Derby.

League leaders Gor Mahia were dealt a stunning blow on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, succumbing to a 4-1 thrashing by relegation-threatened APS Bomet in a rescheduled FKF Premier League fixture at Nyayo National Stadium. The shocking result ended K'Ogalo's seven-match unbeaten streak and marked their heaviest defeat of the 2025/2026 season.
Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor took full responsibility for the loss, citing fatigue and extensive squad rotation as contributing factors. With the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards looming on Saturday, Akonnor made nine changes to the lineup that secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Tusker FC just days earlier. Only goalkeeper Byrne Omondi and defender Mike Kibwage retained their places from the previous match.
"Today was a bad day. We did not do well in a lot of areas," Akonnor stated in his post-match comments on Tuesday. "I saw a lot of fatigue in some of our players in our last match. I thought it was the right time to give other players a chance... but it did not go well."
Despite the eventual outcome, the 21-time league champions started brightly. Ghanaian midfielder George Amonoo opened the scoring in the fifth minute with his first goal for the club. However, the lead was short-lived as the heavily rotated Gor Mahia squad struggled for cohesion. APS Bomet, fighting to climb off the bottom of the table, grew in confidence and began to exploit the home side's defensive frailties.
The turning point came when former AFC Leopards forward Hansel Ochieng converted a penalty after a foul by Kibwage to level the score. Ochieng then put Bomet ahead just before halftime with a well-taken low shot. He completed his hat-trick in the second half, punishing a deflated Gor Mahia side before Rodgers Kipkemoi sealed the historic victory with a dinked finish in the 87th minute.
The loss was Gor Mahia's most significant in the league since a 3-0 defeat to Posta Rangers in January 2022.
For APS Bomet, the victory is a monumental achievement. It was only their second win of the season and their first-ever against the Kenyan football giants. The win lifted them from the bottom of the table to 17th place with eight points.
Bomet's head coach, Benedict Wanjala, praised his team's clinical finishing. "We have been playing well, but results have not been coming our way. We have been creating many chances and not converting them. Today I am happy the boys have implemented what we worked on in training," he said on Tuesday. However, he remained grounded, emphasizing the need to focus on upcoming matches in their fight for survival.
Despite the humbling defeat, Gor Mahia remains at the top of the FKF Premier League standings with 19 points. However, the result exposes potential vulnerabilities in their squad depth and serves as a significant blow to morale just days before they face their arch-rivals. Coach Akonnor now faces the challenge of rallying his troops and ensuring this shock result does not derail their title aspirations. The performance of the fringe players who were given a chance will undoubtedly come under scrutiny as the club prepares for one of the biggest matches of the season.
