Nairobi, Kenya – Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has been recalled to the national soccer team, Harambee Stars, after missing out in the previous squad for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
Nairobi, Kenya – September 26, 2025 (EAT).
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has recalled Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo to the national squad ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, marking his return after missing the previous call-up.
Odhiambo, who impressed in Kenya’s 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign, rejoins the team after being left out of recent fixtures against Gambia and Seychelles.
The player will link up with the national team for training in Nairobi before the qualifiers kick off in October.
His recall signals McCarthy’s intent to bolster midfield creativity and experience as Kenya seeks a strong run toward World Cup qualification.
Kenya faces a tough qualification group, including North African giants and West African powerhouses.
Odhiambo’s earlier omission had raised questions from fans and pundits, given his stellar club form with Gor Mahia this season.
Kenya last appeared in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in November 2024, where they secured a 1–0 win against Seychelles but lost 2–1 to Gambia.
Coach Benni McCarthy: “Austin has shown tremendous form at club level. We need players who can bring vision and composure to the midfield.”
Gor Mahia Captain Geoffrey Ochieng’: “His return is a big boost. He brings experience and leadership both on and off the pitch.”
Stats 2025 Season (Gor Mahia): 7 goals, 11 assists, 85% pass accuracy.
National Caps: 12 appearances, 2 goals since debut in 2022.
Kenya’s next fixture will be against Tunisia on October 12, 2025, in Nairobi.
Final 25-man squad announcement expected by October 5, 2025.
Potential midfield partnerships with Ryan Ogam and Cliff Nyakeya under scrutiny.
