Google and Xreal unveiled Project Aura, an Android XR-based augmented reality headset with built-in cameras and Gemini AI support. Additional smart glasses leveraging the Android XR platform will be developed by partners including Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker.
Mountain View, CA – At its annual I/O developer conference, Google, in collaboration with Xreal, officially unveiled Project Aura, a new augmented reality headset built on the Android XR platform and infused with Gemini AI for real-time, contextual intelligence.
See-Through Display Lenses: Offer transparent, heads-up visuals without obstructing the real world
Integrated Cameras & Microphones: Capture surroundings for intelligent overlays and interaction
Gemini AI Onboard: Enables real-time information, visual recognition, and context-aware suggestions directly in your field of view
From navigating urban environments to translating foreign languages and recognizing objects on the fly, Project Aura is engineered to bring ambient computing to your eyes.
“Project Aura is designed to merge AI and AR into a seamless interface that understands and augments your world in real time,” Google said during the keynote.
In a strategic push to broaden AR adoption, Google also announced new partnerships with:
Samsung – Expected to release a high-performance XR headset
Gentle Monster – Known for stylish smart eyewear, focusing on blending tech with fashion
Warby Parker – Bringing mainstream, consumer-friendly designs to AR glasses
These collaborations will deliver multiple Android XR-powered devices that integrate Gemini AI, enabling consumers to choose from a range of form factors and fashion styles.
Google’s Project Aura and expanded XR partnerships signal a serious return to the AR race, with a clear focus on:
Hands-free AI interactions
Contextual overlays for productivity, accessibility, and everyday use
Mass-market appeal through design-focused partners
This also positions Android XR as the open alternative to Apple’s VisionOS ecosystem, giving manufacturers and developers a scalable, Gemini-powered AR platform to build on.
While pricing and availability for Project Aura were not disclosed, developer kits and SDK updates for Android XR are expected to roll out in the second half of 2025.
