Good Neighbors Kenya this week commemorated 30 years of service, marking a milestone for an organisation that began with a focus on street children in Nairobi's Korogocho slum and has since grown into a nationwide force for community development.

The anniversary offers a moment of reflection on the power of sustained, community-focused initiatives in tackling Kenya's most persistent challenges. For three decades, the organisation's work in child protection, education, and income generation has directly addressed the core issues affecting millions of Kenyan families.

From Korogocho to Ten Counties

Established in 1995 as an affiliate of Good Neighbors International, the organisation's initial mission was to provide a safe haven for children in Korogocho. It started by enrolling just three children in school, a humble beginning that has since expanded dramatically. Today, Good Neighbors Kenya operates in 10 project areas, including Nairobi, Kajiado, Marsabit, and Siaya counties.

The organisation's growth was celebrated at a Gala Dinner in Nairobi on December 11, 2025, attended by government partners, community leaders, and beneficiaries. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kenya, Kang Hyung-shik, who was the chief guest, commended Good Neighbors as a "long-term trustworthy partner."

A Legacy of Tangible Change

Over 30 years, the organisation's holistic approach has yielded significant results, focusing on creating self-reliant communities rather than just providing aid. Key achievements highlighted during the anniversary celebrations include:

• 18,345 children supported and protected through scholarships and educational programs.
• 389,195 community members have benefited from various programs ranging from health and sanitation to income generation.
• Extensive partnerships with county governments, particularly in health, such as the recent donation of six advanced ambulances to Kajiado County to boost maternal and newborn health.
• Ongoing projects in climate adaptation, including drought-tolerant farming initiatives in Kajiado to build long-term community resilience.

Looking to the Future

While celebrating past successes, speakers at the anniversary event emphasized that significant challenges remain. Issues of poverty, inequality, and the climate crisis continue to threaten the progress made. In a video message, Country Director Namunha affirmed the organisation's renewed commitment to justice and sustainable development goals.
