Deepening rifts within ODM over a potential pact with President Ruto spark fears of a split, recalling the party’s history of bitter leadership ousters.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing its most severe existential crisis since its inception. As the push for a cooperation pact with President William Ruto gains momentum, deep fault lines have emerged, rekindling memories of the bitter factional wars that have historically plagued Kenya’s premier opposition party.
Insiders describe a party at war with itself. On one side is the "Government Faction," led by acting Party Leader Oburu Oginga, which argues that stability and resource allocation require working with the state. On the other is the "Resistance Faction," comprising younger firebrands who view the deal as a betrayal of the party’s reformist DNA.
The current turmoil is eerily reminiscent of the infamous "Magerer Langat" and "Ababu Namwamba" eras, where allegations of betrayal led to chaotic ousters. Party officials are now openly trading barbs, with claims of intimidation and "de-whipping" of dissenting members becoming commonplace.
"Differing opinions are part and parcel of democracy," a senior party official insisted, attempting to downplay the rift. However, the reality on the ground suggests otherwise. The fight is not just about strategy; it is about the succession of Raila Odinga and the control of the party’s vast political machinery.
At the heart of the conflict is the pending merger or coalition with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Critics within the party argue that ODM is being cannibalized.
As the 2027 General Election horizon nears, ODM must decide whether it is a government-in-waiting or a partner-in-government. If history is any guide, these divisions, if left unchecked, could lead to a splintering that would hand UDA an easy victory. The ghosts of past ousters are circling Orange House, and this time, there is no Raila Odinga to wave the fly-whisk and restore order.
