Extreme cold (-39°C) grounds flights in Finnish Lapland, stranding thousands of tourists in a logistical nightmare as airport equipment freezes solid.

The winter wonderland has turned into a frozen prison. Thousands of international tourists, including families who traveled to see Santa Claus, are stranded in Finnish Lapland after an extreme cold snap grounded all flights. With temperatures plummeting to -39°C, airport equipment has simply ceased to function, leaving travelers trapped in the Arctic Circle.
The crisis centers on Kittila Airport, a key hub for ski resorts and Northern Lights tourism. Flights to London, Paris, and Amsterdam have been cancelled for three consecutive days. The cold is so severe that de-icing fluid freezes upon contact with the aircraft, and refueling trucks cannot operate.
Tourists describe a chaotic scene. Hotels are fully booked, forcing some families to sleep in airport terminals or emergency shelters. "We came for the magic of Lapland, but this is misery," said a British father of two, stuck in the terminal for 48 hours. "The kids are crying, the food is running out, and nobody knows when we can leave."
As the Northern Lights dance overhead, the mood on the ground is darkening. The Arctic, usually a place of beauty, is reminding the world of its brutal power.
