East Africa is set to lead the continent with 5.8% tourism growth in 2026, but experts warn the post-pandemic recovery remains vulnerable to global shocks.

The safari jeeps are rolling again, and the hotels in Zanzibar are full. According to the latest UN Tourism data, East Africa is spearheading the continent’s post-pandemic recovery, with a projected growth of 5.8% in 2026.
After the dark years of lockdowns and travel bans, the sector is witnessing a robust rebound. Africa as a whole saw an 8% increase in arrivals in 2025, reaching 81 million visitors. But it is the East African bloc—driven by Ethiopia’s reforms and Kenya’s diversified attractions—that is setting the pace. The return of the international traveler is a lifeline for millions of livelihoods, from the maasai mara guides to the coffee shops of Addis Ababa.
The recovery is uneven but undeniable. North Africa is stabilizing, but East Africa is accelerating.
This isn't just about tourists on beaches; it's about business confidence. The growth in arrivals correlates with increased foreign direct investment and a stabilizing currency. However, the industry warns against complacency. "We are one crisis away from a slump," warned a Nairobi-based tour operator. "We need to diversify beyond wildlife and fix our infrastructure."
For now, however, the mood is cautiously optimistic. The world is coming back to East Africa, and the region is ready to welcome them—with open arms and fingers crossed.
