The Anti-Counterfeit Authority seizes 2,996 fake scientific calculators worth Sh8 million at Ruby Mall, Nairobi, averting a potential disaster for students preparing for national exams.

A major exams catastrophe has been averted after the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) intercepted a massive consignment of fake scientific calculators worth Sh8 million (approx. $55,000) in the heart of Nairobi. The devices, destined for the hands of unsuspecting candidates, were seized during a dawn raid at Ruby Mall in the Central Business District.
The operation, led by ACA Nairobi Regional Manager Abdi Abikar, uncovered 2,996 counterfeit units that had been cleverly packaged to mimic a leading Japanese brand. Authorities believe the gadgets were being stockpiled for the back-to-school rush, targeting parents and students preparing for the upcoming national examinations. One suspect was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with investigations into the supply chain of these "academic weapons."
"These are not just fake plastics; they are career killers," Abikar warned during a press briefing at the scene. "A student using this device in a physics or mathematics paper is guaranteed to fail because the functions are programmed incorrectly. We are talking about incorrect sine and cosine values that would ruin a child's final grade."
This seizure is part of a 100-day rapid results initiative by the Ministry of Trade to sanitize the local market. It comes just days after a similar raid in Meru recovered Sh1.5 million in illicit alcohol, pointing to a surge in counterfeit goods flooding the market as the economy bites.
For the 2,996 students who might have walked into an exam room with these faulty devices, the raid is a salvation. But for the education sector, it is a chilling reminder of how the greed of a few traders can threaten the integrity of national assessments. The suspect is expected to be arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts tomorrow.
