The high-stakes race in Elgeyo Marakwet County is set to reinforce Iten's global status as the 'Home of Champions' and provide a significant economic boost to the region this Sunday.
ITEN, Elgeyo Marakwet County – All eyes in the athletics world will turn to Iten this Sunday, November 30, 2025, as a field of elite and amateur runners converges for the annual Iten International Marathon. With a lucrative KSh 1 million prize purse for both the men's and women's winners, the race is a major draw for top-tier talent, further cementing the town's legendary status as the 'Home of Champions'.
The 42.195-kilometre race, organized by the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government in partnership with Athletics Kenya, is more than a competition; it is a celebration of the region's profound contribution to global long-distance running. The event is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators, providing a significant economic injection into the local hospitality and retail sectors.
The marathon's course is notoriously challenging, set at an average altitude of 2,400 meters (approximately 7,900 feet) above sea level. This high-altitude environment, which makes Iten a premier training destination for athletes worldwide, presents a formidable test of cardiovascular endurance. The undulating, hilly terrain winds through the scenic highlands overlooking the Great Rift Valley, demanding exceptional physical conditioning and tactical race execution from all competitors.
According to statements from previous editions, the prize money extends beyond the winners, with the top 20 finishers in both male and female categories receiving cash awards. The runner-up is slated to receive KSh 750,000, while the third-place finisher will take home KSh 500,000, making it one of the most lucrative marathons in the country. Organizers have confirmed that the race will adhere to international standards, with electronic timing and anti-doping controls managed by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) to ensure a clean and fair competition.
Iten's reputation as a global athletics powerhouse is unparalleled. In 2019, the town was officially recognized by World Athletics as a World Athletics Heritage Landmark for its outstanding contribution to the history and development of athletics. For decades, it has been the training ground for a remarkable number of Olympic medalists, world champions, and world record holders.
The foundation of this success is often credited to legendary coach Brother Colm O’Connell of St. Patrick’s High School, who has mentored generations of champions since his arrival in 1976. Athletes who have honed their skills on Iten's iconic dirt trails include 800m world record holder David Rudisha, marathon champions Mary Keitany, Edna Kiplagat, and Wilson Kipsang, among many others. The presence of such icons provides a powerful source of inspiration for the thousands of aspiring local and international athletes who train in the town.
The Iten Marathon serves as a key pillar in the county's strategy to promote sports tourism and local economic development. The influx of athletes, their support teams, and fans provides a substantial boost to hotels, restaurants, and transport services. Former world marathon champion Wilson Kipsang and four-time world champion Lornah Kiplagat are among the elite athletes who have invested in hospitality and training facilities in the area, contributing to the town's growth.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Governor Wisley Rotich has previously stated that the marathon is an opportunity for local athletes who train rigorously to showcase their talent on home soil. The event also aligns with broader community initiatives, with past editions incorporating themes like climate resilience and tree planting. By providing a world-class competitive platform locally, the marathon helps nurture the next generation of Kenyan champions while stimulating sustainable economic activity in the region.
